Formation of Eco-Stars
Rice Lane Infant and Nursery School, Liverpool

Rice Lane Infant and Nursery School

"It has made the whole school community more aware of eco issues"

What was the project?

A group of pupils from Rice Lane Infant and Nursery School formed the Eco-Stars to improve the sustainability of their school. Changes the Eco-Stars made included identifying a new recycling firm to help the school to recycle more, organising new recycling bins for each class and monitoring the waste each week. The class recycling the most was awarded a certificate. The group also identified all sorts of other ways to re-use and recycle rubbish, from using plastic bottles to make a greenhouse to recycling phones to help the rainforest and saving milk bottle tops to raise money for "Help the Heroes".

What did the project change?

The school said: "It has made the whole school community more aware of eco issues and recycle, reuse, repair and reduce. The Eco Stars have had much more impact that any teacher talking to the children about such issues."

What did the judges say?

The impact the work of the group had on the school as a whole and the wider community really stood out and we were impressed by the passion of the children to make a difference.
