The Domino Project
Radyr Comprehensive School, Cardiff

"It has meant that a subject which is not usually discussed in schools has been openly discussed"
What was the project?
Radyr School identified that there was a need for students to be able to discuss LGBT issues and asked the School Council to create a project to tackle this concern. The outcome was the Domino Project which was launched in the All Wales LGBT youth conference in Cardiff. With the slogan 'I am who I am', the project aimed to have acceptance for all and was designed to create a domino effect throughout Cardiff and eventually the UK. The group set up a You Tube Channel where people could post messages of support and created a Twitter and Tumblr account. Members of the Council also filmed messages of support, arranged assemblies for all year groups and as a result of the project there are plans for members of the council to run workshops in other schools within the city.
What did the project change?
The school said: "It has meant that a subject which is not usually discussed in schools has been openly discussed. Also, it has allowed LGBT students to 'fit in' and be accepted more within our school community."
What did the judges say?
We were impressed by the ambition of the project to be taken up across the UK and the way the group communicated their campaign message through different campaigning techniques.
