Total Body Image
Shuttleworth College, Burnley
"It has made people feel more confident about their body and has educated them on how to conduct their body image"
What was the project?
The College Council at Shuttleworth College created a working group of representatives from all years to explore a project around the theme of body image. The council coordinated a questionnaire completed by year groups to find out what sorts of topics people were interested in. From this they developed a lesson plan which focused on body image and self esteem. The council themselves ran a session with teachers in a staff CPD session and the lesson was then taught by all form teachers on one day across the college. In addition, the council organised other body image activities including PSHE lessons on stress management, hair and makeup demonstrations and organising School Nurse drop in sessions to support students with body image concerns.
What did the project change?
The school said: "This project has made the whole school focus on this issue of total body image. It has made people feel more confident about their body and has educated them on how to conduct their body image. This in turn has made the students healthier in their attitude to their body image."
What did the judges say?
This was a fantastic example of a school-wide project and we were particularly impressed by the Council’s idea to hold sessions themselves with teachers.
